Con: Windows Vista

Sorry, Vista is not for gamers

I know Microsoft has been touting the benefits for gamers of their new operating system, but that fact is right now Vista is a horrible choice for gamers.

The main reason is that Vista breaks most of our current games. Many of the games you love to play will be glitchy or maybe won't even work at all. I understand this is a necessary evil when a new operating system comes out, but that is a huge negative to gamers when their 'games' don't work.

Another big beef I have with Vista is that it hogs a lot of system resources. With all its pretty animations and desktop special effects, it takes away precious resources from your power hungry games. Also, Vista startup times are much longer than they were with XP.

All the features that Vista has are not ready for prime time.

  • DirectX 10 isn't all that it is cracked up to be yet, and games are not going to require it for a long time.
  • All ReadyBoost does is make it so your computer runs as fast as when you had XP (hmmm, why'd I switch?).
  • Not many gamers ned a performance diagnostic to determine if a game can run on their machine.
  • Live for Windows is not there yet.
  • Gamers don't care about Parental Controls, Game Explorer, and the Sidebar.

Vista may get there someday, but for now it is definitely not for gamers.

PS This was a rebuttal to the article 'A Gaming Vista' which had horrible reasons for upgrading to Vista, linked below in 'Sources'.
