High definition formats will have slow uptake

Sorry, but no one is going to be able to replicate how well DVDs did, and have been doing since they arrived on the market. DVDs were far superior to VHS in many ways, many more ways than DVD versus HD DVD or Blu-ray. Also, going against the new formats is the advent of digital distribution, where physical media is no longer required.

Let's face it, VHS was a really bad technology. You had to rewind and fast forward tapes to get to the spot you wanted. Quality (video and sound) degraded the more you watched the tapes. DVD was not just far superior in Quality and features, but it removed us from the paradigm of movie theater reels. All VHS was, was an home version of theatrical movie reels. DVD was something different, something better. The high definition formats are stuck with the same issue as VHS, they are just an improvement over DVDs, they are nothing special.

The change in paradigm that is about to come is the introduction of digital distribution. We no longer need to have physical media to enjoy movies. We will be able to get any movie or TV show we want (almost) instantly. No going to a physical store with a limited selection. No bookshelf's full of DVDs taking up space. Everything will be at our fingertips and that is the media paradigm shift.

We are now in a transitional phase. Downloading content off the Internet has been continuously gathering steam. HD DVD and Blu-ray will both probably sell alright, and one may overtake the other eventually, but their sales will pale in comparison with digital distribution.
